All their canoes, ex- 1 ,—«a cept a few at Opoorage or Mercury Bay, which were of onepiece, and hollowed by fire, are built after this plan, andfew are lefs than twenty feet long : fome of the fmaller forthave outriggers, and fometimes two of them are joinedtogether, but this is not common. The carving uponthe (tern and head ornaments of the inferior boats, whichfeem to be intended wholly for fifhing, confifts of thefigure of a man, with a face as ugly as can be conceived,and a monftrous tongue thruft out of the mouth, withthe white fhells of fea-ears ftuck in for the eyes.
